Gross Dam & Reservoir | Rockfall Evaluation & Fence Design
Gross Dam & Reservoir | Rockfall Evaluation & Fence Design
A geologic reconnaissance of the slope above the powerhouse and penstock as well as the existing valve house was performed. A second site visit was performed with a contractor experienced in rock mitigation barriers to evaluate the constructability and cost of different alternatives for mitigating the potential for damage to the proposed facilities caused by rockfall. Rockfall simulation analyses were performed to evaluate the kinetic energy and bounce height for a range of rockfall boulder sizes at locations along the slope where alternative rockfall mitigation barriers were considered. Feasibility-level cost estimates were prepared to compare the cost of each alternative. Recommendations and design details for a rockfall barrier fence located near the toe of the existing east slope, which Denver Water has selected as the preferred alternative, have also been developed.
