Kumar & Associates, Inc., provided geotechnical engineering on the Regional Transportation District's Central Platte Valley Light Rail Transit System to serve lower downtown Denver. The system includes an alignment of approximately 9,000 lineal feet, two bridges crossing over Cherry Creek and the 15th Street Viaduct, and four stations located at the Auraria Campus, Broncos Stadium, the Pepsi Center, and Denver Union Terminal. The alignment traverses through parking lots, industrial areas, and adjacent to the existing Consolidated Main Line.
Thirty-three (33) exploratory borings were drilled along the track alignment, bridges and stations to obtain information on subsurface conditions, including the depth to bedrock for the support of bridge structures, and the extent and variability of existing fill underlying the stations and track alignment. Fill generally consisted of soil, slag, brick fragments, and other construction and industrial debris. A geotechnical report was submitted which provided recommendations for the support of the bridge structures on deep drilled pier or driven pile foundation systems, support of the stations on shallow foundation systems, and requirements for the excavation and possible re-use of existing fill.
